Accessible Elegance: Railing Systems + ADA Code Compliance
Sponsored By Livers Bronze
Presented By Lee Kirby
1 ADA Accessibility / Barrier-Free Req.
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour

Handrails and guardrails are a safety feature that we easily take for granted as a common fixture in environments where stairs and balconies are featured, aiding us in our coming and going.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Determine the specific conditions that mandate the installation of ADA-compliant handrails for various environments, including stairways and ramps, to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations.
  2. Clearly outline the required dimensions, such as height, width, and clearance, for ADA-compliant handrails and explain how these measurements contribute to creating accessible and user-friendly spaces.
  3. Analyze key railing specifications, including material selection, gripping surfaces, and installation standards, while reviewing how these aspects align with broader ADA code requirements.
  4. Assess the specific requirements for railings on ADA-compliant ramps and stairs, focusing on details like slope, landing, and handrail continuity to ensure structures meet accessibility standards.

Terrazzo in Healthcare
Presented By Gary French
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

The purpose of this presentation is to provide information that will be helpful in specifying terrazzo in a healthcare setting. Participants will gain an understanding of terrazzo systems and the variety of design applications available in terrazzo

Learning Objectives:
  1. Attendees will learn what terrazzo is, its rich history, and why it should be specified in healthcare settings. They will be given the definition and list of components that make up terrazzo. They will hear of the endless color options and various aggregates available.
  2. Attendees will explore the green elements and sustainability of terrazzo. As the original recycled flooring, terrazzo has proven to last over 100 years in buildings and survive hurricanes and floods.
  3. Attendees will learn about the types of systems available in terrazzo, the differences between cement and epoxy systems, the installation of each system, surface preparation, moisture testing, grouting, and grinding.
  4. Attendees will learn about precast vs poured-in-place stairs and curbs, non-slip strips, crack repair, flexural test, crack membrane, and divider strips.
  5. Attendees will see a series of designs and case studies of terrazzo in healthcare applications.
