Elevate Your Outdoors: The Art of Designing Functional Living Spaces
Sponsored By Wolf Home Products
Presented By Jason Foura
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Overview of the outdoor living space and materials used in outdoor living design. Material selection, care and design, will be discussed, and common misconceptions will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the evolution of the outdoor living market. Discuss how new materials have longer sustainability on life cycle costs and how wood and older materials have continued to create maintenance issues and if not maintained can create safety issues with Code related materials on decking and railing.
  2. Address trends and materials used in outdoor living spaces. Trends are moving toward more Aluminum railing items. Some competitors don’t have IRC and IBC coded materials in the field.
  3. Apply standard design principles and how they relate to outdoor living spaces. Many of the design principles relate to safety because of life cycle maintenance as well as improper flashing and installation that lead to unsafe building practices.
  4. Identify and explain common misconceptions and safety issues in designing outdoor living spaces. Decking today has many options when it comes to installation and using the proper installation hardware. We review all code rulings for decking and railing.
  5. Explain proper use and care of outdoor living spaces and how to avoid them for extended performance. We review how some chemicals can harm the decking material and which products can be safely used to provide a non-toxic method to maintaining the life of your deck and rail material. Some products can react to PVC and cause issues to the capstop.

The Design Advantages of Composite Roofing Solutions
Sponsored By DaVinci Roofscapes
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

In this one-hour course, design professionals will take an in-depth look at the sustainable, and versatile attributes of composite roofing solutions. The advantages of composite roofing systems will be examined, including long life-cycle, durability, and its ability to be specified in a wide array of applications and environments.

Learning Objectives:
  1. List the green features of virgin-engineered polymer composite roofing materials
  2. State the design and architectural benefits of specifying a composite roofing solution including product integrity, versatility, and aesthetics
  3. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of traditional roofing materials versus synthetic products
  4. Discuss the durability and long life-cycle of composite roofing materials including the various testing methods and approvals related to roofing materials

Concrete Tile Roofing: The World's Most Sustainable and Energy Efficient Roof System - Update
Sponsored By Eagle Roofing
Presented By David Vallas
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour

In this one hour course, we will take an in-depth look at the sustainability and energy efficient attributes of concrete tile roofing, including the near zero-waste manufacturing process, life-cycle cost and performance versus temporary asphalt shingle roofing as well as the installation process which enhances the inherent thermal mass

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss how the versatility of concrete tile roofing combined with its durability makes it one of the most sustainable roofing products available
  2. Consider the value of products composed of a small number of raw materials that are sustainable, including some recycled materials
  3. Review the near zero waste manufacturing process of concrete roof tiles from the introduction of raw materials to the finished product
  4. Compare and contrast an installation method that exploits the air permeable characteristics of concrete tile roofs versus temporary roofing materials
  5. Identify key performance characteristics of concrete tile roofing including wind and hail resistance
  6. Analyze the longevity, durability, and overall life cycle cost analysis of concrete roof tile compared to asphalt shingles, wood shakes, slate, and metal
  7. Confidently specify concrete tile roofing as an alternative to slate, metal, wood shakes, and temporary asphalt shingles
