Introduction to Terracotta Cladding

Terracotta as a building material has a long history across the world but faced challenges establishing its architectural legacy in the United States. In this course we will review the history of architectural terracotta throughout its rise in use, fall in use, and revival of the material in the US from the late 1800s to present. Cladding attachment methods and systems, types and applications of terracotta materials, and the features and benefits of terra cotta cladding material use will be learned. The environmental impact of terracotta production and innovative sustainability features, such as photocatalytic coatings will also be examined.

  1. Describe terracotta panel materials and how they are used
  2. Understand the standards and codes related to terracotta panels
  3. Learn how terracotta panels are used as a part of rain screen systems and sealed wall systems
  4. Learn the different methods of installation for terracotta panels
