Thermal Comfort, Unpacked: A Comprehensive Survey of HVAC Systems to Improve Design and Operational Understandings
Presented By Maria Acosta
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 RCEP PDH(s) for Engineers

Overlooking the smallest detail in HVAC systems design can cause huge issues later. Join us in this one-hour course as we discuss HVAC systems as it relates to thermal comfort, the ever evolving changes to energy requirements that impact HVAC systems and the factors that impact durability, sustainability and longevity.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define and discuss the effects of thermal and acoustic comfort on building occupants that improve health, wellness, and productivity while evaluating the cost-efficiency, design considerations and the evolving HVAC industry.
  2. Explore the Commercial HVAC market and comparatively analyze the types of HVAC systems available for commercial use that optimize durability, innovation and sustainability.
  3. Identify the details that are important to ensure optimal occupant comfort and details that should be confirmed up-front to avoid future change-orders, unexpected costs, and errors that can cause safety concerns or negatively affect enhancing longevity and reliability.
  4. Recall important unit placement considerations for optimized performance and articulate the importance of proper service and maintenance clearance for operation and safety.

How the 2020 (7th Ed) FL Building Code and ASTM Standards Make Stucco Work in Florida
Presented By Harry Lubitz
2 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
2 FBPE Hours of Advanced Coursework registered with the FBC

This course takes a deep dive into the specific IBC/IRC and Florida Building Code regarding proper design and application of Exterior Stucco. It first reviews and explains the ASTM C926 and C1063 standards that are the basis of the stucco and lath application standards in the code.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Articulate the specific IBC/IRC and Florida Building Code references and details regarding proper design and application of Exterior Portland Cement-Based Stucco.
  2. Explain the ASTM C926 and C1063 standards that are the basis of the stucco and lath application standards in the Florida code and how they may…or may not apply to the Florida environment and construction techniques.
  3. Highlight the specific climatic concerns of the warm/humid Florida environment and describe the proper design for building envelope water management using the ASTM E331 water resistance test.
  4. Explain the methodology of calculating and designing the assembly for the proper wind resistance necessary for the Florida hurricane prone climate using ASCE 07 and the ASTM E330.
  5. Understand the proper fastening needs for the wind loads and the proper use of sealed face barrier systems to mitigate the water intrusion.
  6. Identify the proper cladding system warranty and know what steps are needed to provide the owner with a warranted exterior envelope.
  7. Support the need for trained and certified installers and Document a long term maintenance schedule.
