This overview of concrete floor basics shows participants how to get the most from finished concrete floors. Along the way, it discusses levels of finished concrete flooring not commonly known. The program shows how to protect and maintain finished concrete flooring.

  1. Compare the waste generation characteristics of lithium-silicate hardener/densifiers to older potassium and sodium-silicate hardeners/densifiers.
  2. Estimate the expected service life of a finished concrete floor and rate it for sustainability on a scale of "good-fair-poor."

In many projects, installation of floor finishes is one of the last items to occur prior to substantial completion. However, 09 flooring specification sections require moisture testing before flooring can be installed on concrete slabs. When those moisture tests fail, the project faces time delays, unexpected costs, or both.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss owner’s design intent and how it drives project requirements, thereby directly impacting specification language.
  2. Review specific industry documents and reference standards that drives the requirement to moisture test all concrete slabs.
  3. Investigate the genesis of current 09 flooring specification language.
  4. Specify sustainable design processes that eliminate: (1) project delivery delays due to concrete slab moisture, (2) subsequent bond or moisture failures, and (3) design team liability for each.
